Waitress premiered on August 19, 2015, at the American Repertory Theater with an all-female creative team. Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles does the music and lyrics for Waitress. The book is by Jessie Nelson, and Diane Paulus directs the show. Waitress transferred to Broadway in March 2016 at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. The musical is based on a 2007 film of the same name, written and directed by Adrienne Shelly. The story, set in the American South, is about a waitress, Jenna, who is stuck in a joyless marriage with seemingly no way out. With an unplanned baby on the way, Jenna starts to feel the pressure and ends up having an affair with her gynecologist. She also decides to join a pie baking contest in a nearby county for the prize money. The musical takes spectators through Jenna’s journey as she searches for the right ingredients for happiness. Tony Award winner Jessie Mueller plays Jenna in both productions. Drew Gehling is Dr. Jim Pomatter, the gynecologist while the husband, Earl, was portrayed by Joe Tippet in the 2015 production, Nick Cordero in the Broadway show and currently William Popp. From March 31, 2017, Sara Bareilles will take over as Jenna, and Chris Diamantopoulos will play Dr. Pomatter. Waitress has received critical acclaim, particularly Bareilles’ score and Muller’s performance. During its Broadway previews, it garnered $145, 532, setting the record for a single performance at the Brooks Atkinson Theater. The show had four Tony Award nominations in 2016, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. Christopher Fitzgerald, who plays Ogie in the show, won the 2016 Drama Desk Award and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical. The Broadway cast album received a nomination for the Best Musical Theater Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards. Waitress is set to begin its U.S. national tour on October 17, 2017, at the Playhouse Square in Cleveland.
